Safe and sound at the Camil Homestead in Gainesville, FL Mike's first email reply late last night after release from the Taylor County Jail! "BROTHERS Thank you all for your concern and support. I have been liberated by Team Camil and am now safe at his pad in Gainesville. Mr. Phillips sorry about the mix up with the Am-Vet/ Am Legion thing (brain fart). Mr Cox, I sent a letter to you same time as Casey's. As to the conditions and treatment: not ever roughed up by the guards myself, but verbally harrassed after I started my campaign for better conditions. As to the charges, I was booked on armed burglary and criminal mischeif. A week later they added the possession of burglary tools and dropped the armed burglary to armed trespass. Worst jail I have ever been in. Racism and nepotism through the roof. Inmates no clue about collective power. I have much much to report, and it was actually good for my mission to encounter this type of situation. Incarcerated vets neglected by jail authorities and local VA. I planted a seed there but didnt expect such rapid response by VFP/Occupy. I am truly blessed. My undying gratitude to all of you! Peace love and see you in Ashville!" Story by - Rafael Bautista (Police State Victim) On June 6, 2014, two officers approached me at the beach. I was feeding my four month old daughter her bottle. My daughters' 2 lb., toy, Yorkie was leashed to the stroller. My daughter's diaper bag was hanging off the stroller on the end facing me. The officers stopped their ATV and asked if that was my dog. I replied 'yes' and asked them if they were going to give me a ticket. They said yes. They asked if I had my ID on me. I asked what would happen if I did not. The officer then responded by saying that I would be arrested. That is when I turned the camera on them the first time. I asked the officer if having a dog on the beach was a crime. He eventually said yes, so I asked several times to make sure that was correct. I initially recorded that clip because the officers took a hostile position against me by enclosing me in while I was sitting near the water, barefoot, with my daughter in my hands. They asked again if I had my ID on my body. I said that it was in the stroller, while I was calmly putting my daughter's bottle away. In the process of standing up, the female officer pushed me back down to the sand. The officer applied pressure on both of my shoulders and pushed down on me. I could not believe what had happened. I was not told that I was being detained or arrested and was not told to remain seated. Instead of losing my mind, I took out my phone and started to record. I was extremely concerned for my daughter's safety at that moment. I was being held down by one officer, while the other searched through my daughter's diaper bag. He went through the bag, even after I told him twice that my wallet was in the basket. He took out my Ipad and removed the contents of the bag, looking at my daughter's vaccination record while he asked for my name again. I was oppressed, angry and completely disregarded as a human being. The officer did not want to know my name, he didn't care. The officers were harassing me to incite something. The officers were in contempt. While they ran my record, they began to write the ticket. I conversed with the male officer, while the other officer ran the info. He told me that the no dog rule is because of poop and because people could trip on the leash. At this point, I was livid. My rights had been violated, people walked by and i asked for help but no one stopped. The whole ordeal took between 15-20 minutes. When I was given the ticket to sign, I signed FUCK YOU PIGS. She called the sergeant and said that the sergeant was coming if I didn't sign. She asked her superior on the phone if she could accept FUCK YOU PIGS as a signature. They then said, again, that I could be arrested if I did not sign. I signed. They left and I finished feeding my daughter, put her feet in the water for the first time; which she loved. We took a beach selfie and bounced to pick up my disabled daughter from school. Rafael Bautista 11AM Clock in at #MAM Sacramento, CA with a full complement of photographers, friends, and security team piling out of two vehicles . It was a beautiful day, hot and hella sunny, the show had already started with a fairly large crowd when we got there, growing every minute with young and old, families, and just a few cops to watch us. There was live music, speeches, free water, and a full contingent of people wanting to make a change in the world, to protect the food we eat, water we drink, and air we breathe. As always I enjoy participating, and more than that I get to do what I love, photography/vidiography documentation and civil disobedience. As the march began with a crowd of 300-400 demonstrators we proceeded from the north side around to the west where we marched up Capitol Mall a few blocks (in the street) then about face back to the Capitol with a pause on Lincoln Way for a photo op. Then continuing back to the Capitol and around the park heading east on N St (Lincoln Hwy) to 15th St, then north to L St. Feeling the heat, sweating like I just got of a pool, I cut across the park to get in position for the demonstration to make its way back to where we started. I was joined by a few other marchers feeling drained from the heat, snapping pictures as I went. As I get to L St my radio chirps “they want to take the street again”….”move into position.” Being where I was I had a great spot to catch it as it happened. As they proceeded to march onto the street and towards me I took up a prone position in the street (after the last cars passed) firing my camera for optimum cover fire of the troops moving my way. As they approached I felt good, good n hot lying on that exceptionally warm asphalt. Watching the faces get closer, as they see me on the ground, camera pointed at them, they look with heads cocked sometimes and tones of smiles flow my way. The little ones are what I was trying to get, the future of humanity is resting on their shoulders once we are gone. The entire march passed over and around me as I snapped as many shots as I could get, it was AWESOME!!! I followed the tail end back, still shooting as I marched, all the while talking to the driver of the first car following us, as he videotaped us from his droid. I hope you enjoy the slideshow, say NO to GMO and PEACE!!!! PS the guys on the roof are not snipers; they’re our guys, with cameras. Long live the fighters! Late last night I was chilln at a squat in the SF bay with some friends from OccupySF and a new friend from north of the border. Liv Gains, an 18 year old Canadian is traveling the US busking her way with just a few thing (the necessities), her dog and a guitar. The OSF team met Liv at one of the demonstrations in SF the other day (Wiener Roast II) and brought her back to the squat. Liv was gracious enough to pull out her guitar on request and let me record her beautiful voice and rendition of this song. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. The homeless situation in the United States is spiraling out of control, and nowhere is this more shameful to our Nation, and an indictment against our current economic system than in the Veterans' Community. There are several ways to address this issue, and I hope in this paper to explore various options we have both as communities and a nation to mitigate the situation. To begin with, we must recognize, as I am sure most of us are aware, that until we eliminate WAR as policy we will always have the matters of PTSD and “re-integration” to contend with. The only sure way to eliminate “homeless veterans” is to eliminate war abroad, and until we can do that, we must catch the vet before they become ensnared in post deployment depression and addictions. That means we must build a platform within the Active Service Term for the individual on a case by case basis. Let me illustrate what this might look like. A group of counselors would begin a series of interviews with the individual with the goal of discerning the individuals’ talents and aspirations. The desired result must be calibrated to the ambitions and abilities of the individual. For example, if a person really wanted “to become a guitar player, but joined the army to get college money” then we must convince that individual to use the GI Bill to enroll in music academy, as opposed to trying to become a business major. The reason we are seeing such large numbers in the drop out rate is that we cannot reasonably expect a young person, having returned from a combat zone, to simply pick up where they left off in high school and have the “college experience”. What must be done is to allow people to pick up where they left off, to re-integrate that person with the one they were “before the Army”. It begins with pre-enlistment screening assuming that the person will live through the military experience, and to return that individual to a comfortable psychological state. Ultimately, no one must be admitted into military service under the age of 21. Secondly, individuals of a “sensitive nature” must be made thoroughly aware of the risks and dangers of exposure to military life, particularly deployment in “hostile territories”. One need not have experienced combat to have been traumatized during ones’ term of service. Sexual assaults, waste and corruption on behalf of the chain of command, and interaction with locals, all have a profound effect on ones' post deployment outlook on life, and there must be mechanisms in place to secure the mental integrity of the individual. Peer counselling with Veterans integrated into active units six months before the person gets out of the military may prepare the young person for post deployment life better than fielding job offers from Corporate headhunters or compulsory Military Guidance Counsellors. To summarize, vets coaching kids on the rigors and challenges of post deployment life. And, it would be preferred that vets were able to conduct “interventions” with the goal of funnelling the right types of people into service, and prevent the entry of individuals not suited for service. We cannot trust the military recruiters to do this, because they all are just working for quotas and the military. It must be civilians with military experience, even family members of vets, that do this outreach. As for the homeless veteran who is presently suffering, they must be made aware of the improvements in VA services and care. They do not want to be cajoled or conned into seeking treatment. Once again, peer to peer models seem to be fairly effective, such as Swords to Plowshares “veterans Commons” program in San Francisco, or the Vet Hunters in Los Angeles, Veterans First! in Orange County and other community based relief programs. With Occupy Veterans San Francisco, I was able to connect veterans of similar culture-generational affinities through informal discussion and organized activities that drew on the strengths of our experiences and skills gained during service, and develop friendships, these new relationships are fostered and a buddy system emerges that allows trust and support. The idea being that a couple of vets, or a group would collectively act together for the benefit of any member. (“All for One, and one for All”). Thus, veterans would be pooling their “benefits” checks and getting apartments together, collectively sharing responsibilities and providing mutual support. The veterans need to be calibrated to one another in only few areas; drug preferences, political orientation, age and gender, etc. Think of it as a “match making” project. Some veterans prefer to live out of doors, and this is fine. With OVSF, we have been able to provide younger veterans who still need the rush of tactical excitement with a “syndicate” of vacant buildings and outdoor spaces where they can bivouac. This latter option entails varying degrees of legality: however it provides us with a crucial political point, as well as keeping the veteran in what I term an “operational mindset”. The bottom line is that younger veterans just coming home have different wants than the older veterans, that the needs of food and shelter are common, and that veterans have to be able to feel liberated at all times. At the neighborhood level, there would appear to be some organizations that do “good work”, for example the established VFW Halls Am Legion, etc. At the city level, populations and administrations need to be pressured through Direct Actions to provide SPACE, any space to homeless veterans. A forcible building take over if one will not be donated to us. An occupation to liberate land. Impeachment of City Officials. Boycotting of businesses, or in extreme cases, property damage. The variety of ways that Direct Action in tandem with political pressure such as petitions and rallies can influence public opinion is considerable. If we are to mitigate the effects of this problem, we must determine what levels of compliance or resistance the veteran is willing or able to engage in. Identify Veterans Confirm status and calibrate personality to action plan Stage the Veteran up, provide stability or track the Vet (Search and Rescue) Support holding pattern Placement Maintenance and Sustainability. |
