We are in San Luis Obispo, one of the prettiest towns we have marched through. It must be said, however, that the civilian population has little inclination to support veterans. A few days ago we took part in the local holiday parade, and it took the town by delighted surprise. This was a Direct Action undertaken spontaneously because I was dismayed that NOT ONE veterans' association or group was involved. This blew us away because SLO has a very fine Vet Building and museum, as well as an Am Legion Post (66) and decent enough service programs, such as the RV's for Vets program, and some good transition programs as well... SOURCE: Federal Register, Vol. 78, No. 16, January 24, 2013, pp. 5182-5183 Thanksgiving day Pirate Mike & I walked to central hub of commerce in downtown Santa Cruz to set up the VFP flag and info center. We stopped at the war memorial, set up shop, chalked, and dialogued with people passing by. Santa Cruz has a massive homeless community, with many of them veterans of various wars over the last 50 years. Although there is a veterans services (pictured below) it has been closed for aprox 3 years for structural renovation... The building sits empty while dozens of homeless vets sleep under bridges or in any nook away from prying eyes or the police. Just like any city SC has a "shelter" off the beaten path and far from the central business dist.
Early Thanksgiving morning w/ Pirate Mike @ Java Junction in Santa Cruz. Preparing for the days activities educating the public.
Pirate Mike and I finally made it to Santa Cruz today after succumbing to several setbacks since we left SF. All in all it has been interesting to say the least, we've had to deal with unprofessional bus drivers, cold nights sleeping, minimal food, a friends vehicle broke down, and an asshole posing as a mechanic. We've also had our share of good luck such as food donations, shelter from the cold, and some cash donations for bus fare.
Time is limited now, so I must be moving on, dont forget to follow Pirate Mikes updates via #OVSF www.occupyveteranssanfrancisco.weebly.com Captians Log: Star Date 11.22.2013 1840hrs - Command squad safe with comms, shelter & good friends. Pirate Mike's injury is healing faster now after additional medical treatment, full recovery expected. Additional reportbacks to follow asap via #OVSF - http://occupyveteranssanfrancisco.weebly.com/1/post/2013/11/november-23rd-2013.htm
Photo collage posted to the #ICM3 Photos tab. Exerpt - "A little back story is in order here." "When the shitty (excuse me, ahem) THE CITY pulled the rug out from under the entire veteran’s community last year by “expanding our administrative operations”, they used t"he old ruse of “earthquake retrofitting” and kicked all the groups out. “Sure”, they said, “ we’ll give you less space back at a higher cost.” Yeah right, this place was built for and given to the veterans by the City as a token of the City’s appreciation for the sacrifices of World War One. “Oh yeah,” they added, “you need to wait a couple years”. - #OVSF Here are a few quick droid pix I took this evening as we (Pirate Mike & I) met with some Green party members at the Peace & Justice Center in San Jose. Earlier today we were at a rally on the campus due to a recent incident of racism... Remember: your donations go directly to Kyle's day-to-day expenses like food, transport, and basic essentials. Clinical expenses are separate. Thank you everybody! This cash goes a long way! Donations can still be made at - https://www.wepay.com/donations/kyles-fight ### Kyle Lesley was diagnosed with stage four Metastatic Melanoma on August 20, 2013. On November 15, 2013 Kyle will begin a clinical trial at UCLA that could last up to two years. This trial is in its third phase; throughout phases one and two, 24% of patients experienced positive results from the drug in-trial. This drug, known as Programmed Cell Death 1 (PD-1), targets the BRAF mutation in Kyle's cells and programs it to die. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programmed_cell_death_1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRAF_%28gene%29) Integral to this clinical trial are two immuno-boosting drugs that Kyle will take alongside the PD-1. This third phase of the trial is designed to test PD-1 and the immuno-boosters side-by-side. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipilimumab) Luckily for us, Kyle's sister Amy was able to get her brother in on this clinical trial. Amy works in dermatology at the UCLA hospital and will be part of the team to watch over Kyle throughout his treatment. Although we are not quite certain, it is likely that most of Kyles' expenses for this procedure will be covered in combination by UCLA and Medi-Cal. Kyle is also integrating multiple medical perspectives into his treatment, eating very specific, high quality natural foods, taking herbal supplements, resting, maintaining an alkaline pH in his body, etc. Now we are scrambling to get everything together and usher Kyle onto this journey with love, warmth, and everything he could possibly need. If you can donate physical things - including a car for Kyle to use - please see the needs list at www.kylesfight.com/needs-list. “It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding; and to the open-handed the search for one who shall receive is joy greater than giving.” ― Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet ### For a list of specific things that Kyle needs please visit: www.kylesfight.com Kyle was recently diagnosed with Metastatic Melanoma in its fourth stage.
