SLO Town Veterans Memorial to Guadalupe X-Mas Parade #ICM3 #OVSF #VFP To see all the photos go to the Photos tab. We are in San Luis Obispo, one of the prettiest towns we have marched through. It must be said, however, that the civilian population has little inclination to support veterans. A few days ago we took part in the local holiday parade, and it took the town by delighted surprise. This was a Direct Action undertaken spontaneously because I was dismayed that NOT ONE veterans' association or group was involved. This blew us away because SLO has a very fine Vet Building and museum, as well as an Am Legion Post (66) and decent enough service programs, such as the RV's for Vets program, and some good transition programs as well... See the whole story on #OVSF - http://occupyveteranssanfrancisco.weebly.com/1/post/2013/12/slo-town-it-certainly-is.html "If you live in the United States, there is a good chance that you are now living in poverty or near poverty. Nearly 50 million Americans, (49.7 Million), are living below the poverty line, with 80% of the entire U.S. population living near poverty or below it." see the whole story here - http://politicalblindspot.com/us-poor/ 2013 Poverty Guidelines - http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/13poverty.cfm
SOURCE: Federal Register, Vol. 78, No. 16, January 24, 2013, pp. 5182-5183 Thanksgiving day Pirate Mike & I walked to central hub of commerce in downtown Santa Cruz to set up the VFP flag and info center. We stopped at the war memorial, set up shop, chalked, and dialogued with people passing by. Santa Cruz has a massive homeless community, with many of them veterans of various wars over the last 50 years. Although there is a veterans services (pictured below) it has been closed for aprox 3 years for structural renovation... The building sits empty while dozens of homeless vets sleep under bridges or in any nook away from prying eyes or the police. Just like any city SC has a "shelter" off the beaten path and far from the central business dist.
Early Thanksgiving morning w/ Pirate Mike @ Java Junction in Santa Cruz. Preparing for the days activities educating the public.
Pirate Mike and I finally made it to Santa Cruz today after succumbing to several setbacks since we left SF. All in all it has been interesting to say the least, we've had to deal with unprofessional bus drivers, cold nights sleeping, minimal food, a friends vehicle broke down, and an asshole posing as a mechanic. We've also had our share of good luck such as food donations, shelter from the cold, and some cash donations for bus fare.
Time is limited now, so I must be moving on, dont forget to follow Pirate Mikes updates via #OVSF www.occupyveteranssanfrancisco.weebly.com Captians Log: Star Date 11.22.2013 1840hrs - Command squad safe with comms, shelter & good friends. Pirate Mike's injury is healing faster now after additional medical treatment, full recovery expected. Additional reportbacks to follow asap via #OVSF - http://occupyveteranssanfrancisco.weebly.com/1/post/2013/11/november-23rd-2013.htm
Photo collage posted to the #ICM3 Photos tab. Exerpt - "A little back story is in order here." "When the shitty (excuse me, ahem) THE CITY pulled the rug out from under the entire veteran’s community last year by “expanding our administrative operations”, they used t"he old ruse of “earthquake retrofitting” and kicked all the groups out. “Sure”, they said, “ we’ll give you less space back at a higher cost.” Yeah right, this place was built for and given to the veterans by the City as a token of the City’s appreciation for the sacrifices of World War One. “Oh yeah,” they added, “you need to wait a couple years”. - #OVSF Here are a few quick droid pix I took this evening as we (Pirate Mike & I) met with some Green party members at the Peace & Justice Center in San Jose. Earlier today we were at a rally on the campus due to a recent incident of racism... Photos will be posted asap. #ICM3 #OVSF |
